Vetiver is a perennial grass native to India but now grown in similar regions around the world, originally due to its popularity for perfumery, and now also for aromatherapy. The essential oil is extracted from the roots of the of the grass, producing a thick, brown oil. Vetiver has a deep earthy scent, like the smell of the first rains rejuvenating the dry earth. Just like the roots of a plant enable it to connect with the earth, feeling stable, steady and secure, these attributes are passed on to the essential oil. For this reason it is also strongly connected to the healing energies of Mother Earth.
