The myth of Peppermint’s origins tells of a nymph named Mentha who succumbed to god Pluto’s desires. His wife Persephone became jealous and stomped poor nymph into the ground and turning her into this flat leafed plant. Peppermint is indigenous to Europe and the Middle East although it is now cultivated around the world. It is a natural hybrid, sometimes still found in the wild with its parent species Spearmint and Watermint. The essential oil is produced through steam distillation.
