From Cinnamon to Essential Oil (Cinnamaldehyde)

Hello everyone and welcome back to chemIst by deStinY! In today’s video we’re going to use a very common spice, cinnamon, and use it to extract the substance that gives it its particular odor: cinnamaldehyde.

For this experiment you’re going to need some cinnamon sticks, DCM (Dichloromethane), a distillation apparatus, sodium chloride, calcium chloride and of course water. The experiment is very lengthy, but the best part is that you’ll be able to appreciate for more time the pleasurable odor of cinnamon.
